National Poetry Day is an annual celebration that inspires people throughout the UK to enjoy, discover and share poems, and that is exactly what we did at Storyhouse, Chester this week. In celebration of National Poetry Day we showcased the incredible talents of some of the poets at play across the borough, our poets took to the stage and wowed us with the power of their poetry. What melted us all most was watching the fledgling poets, who tentatively took up poetry in their late 80s, having the confidence to stand up at the front of a packed theatre to perform their poems!
We were also fortunate enough to be joined by Joy France (Creative in Residence at Afflecks Palace) who was the perfect host for the Poetry Open Mic session that launched the Love Later Life festival at Storyhouse – putting everyone at ease with poems that ranged from sassy, funny and edgy to beautiful and poignant. We cried laughing and then again as she reduced us to tears with tales of love and loss. Afterwards the Community Compass Social Group concluded their day trip to Storyhouse with a lunch to celebrate National Older People’s Day.
